‘Beats Rhymes & Basslines on Radio One FM’
The National Fresh/ Big Beat shows kicked off each weekend for a generation of UK listeners, with Jeff Young dropping a playlist of Rap, Hip-Hop [and other genres that utilised Rap & Hip-Hop] for 3 years after its beginnings in 1987.
The balance of UK & US artists was a major part of the attraction of this show, and as well as the expected tunes of the time, for the Hip-Hop heads that tuned in for the ‘real Rap’ every Friday, it was all about groups with a harder edge like Comptons Most Wanted, Above the Law and Hijack getting weekly airplay on a national radio station.
Pete Tong took over from Young around the end of 1990.
For some reason, the record button was only pressed once on this day, so no Side B.
